Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions people ask most often about speed tests and connection quality.
How do I estimate an archive upload?
Select upload and enter the archive size in the calculator. The estimate assumes a constant rate.
Do other open browser tabs affect the result?
They can. Tabs that play video, show live content or refresh automatically keep using bandwidth during the test. Closing them gives a cleaner measurement.
Do I need an account to keep a history of my results?
We do not offer accounts or history on purpose, because we do not store results. If you want to track your connection, write down or screenshot the figures yourself.
Why is my old computer slower in the test than my new phone?
Fast transfers need processing power. Older devices may also have slower network adapters or lack support for newer Wi-Fi standards, so they cannot reach the full speed of the line.
Will restarting my router help?
Often it does. Routers that have been running for a long time can slow down or hold onto poor wireless channel choices. A restart takes a minute or two and is a good first step when speeds drop.
Can I estimate time before measuring?
Enter an expected rate and file size. Once a measurement finishes you can use the measured rate.
What speed do I need for video calls?
For a high-quality one-to-one video call, a few megabits per second in each direction is usually enough. Group calls and screen sharing need somewhat more, especially on the upload side.
Low ping and low jitter matter as much as speed for a smooth call.
